Building relationships with hard-to-reach parents - online workshop for teachers

As a kindergarten teacher, a teacher, a teacher, we know that the family is the primary socialization environment for children, and we try to get to know the children's background, to build a good relationship with the parents - but what if we leave no stone unturned, but they don't come to the parents, to the reception, they are not a partner in the child's development, we don't reach them through any channels?

  • We've been working for twenty years with kindergartens and schools where many children's parents are hard to reach and engage, so we have a lot of experience of what works and what doesn't work, and why it doesn't.
  • We know how much effort goes into building relationships, so let us help you out a little!

In addition to experience, we also have proven methodological tools for building relationships with parents, thanks to the Step by Step programme, mediation, restorative practices and Parent in Kindergarten-School methods. When parents open up and recognize their role in their child's preschool-school life, and when children see their own parents working together with their preschool teachers or teachers, they feel that we are important to each other here. A positive, friendly relationship between nursery, school and home is good for all children. By working together, both teacher and parent can gain valuable information to build an open, mutually supportive relationship for the benefit of the child.

What do we do during the workshop?

  • We will present the Hungarian context and practice of our work with hard-to-reach families, providing space and time for participants to reflect, find their own analogies and potential resources to apply them in their own contexts, all in an interactive format.
  • We explore what makes certain parents hard to reach, to better understand their perspective.
  • We will show you what good practices exist to build alliances with parents and other professionals.
  • We provide methodological tips on how to organise and run participatory parent meetings where participants are motivated and engaged in discussion and shared commitments.
  • The development-focused mindset and the theory and practice of non-violent communication are communication crutches that help us give good feedback to parents - good in the sense that they actually hear what we have to say, positive feedback increases their trust in us, and our feedback on areas for improvement is not taken as an attack.
  • We will show you communication techniques from the toolbox of mediation and restorative practices.

Responsible cooperation between teacher and parent helps the child's intellectual and emotional development.

"I learnt a lot in three hours, I got practical answers to my questions and the theoretical parts highlighted why what I had tried before often didn't work."
